05:30:pm - 10:30:pm
Katara Drama Theatre - Bldg 16

Katara and Doha Film Institute (DFI) will present a one-week theatrical release of ‘Take Shelter’, the highly acclaimed ‘indie’ dramatic thrillerNever previously screened in the Gulf, the film swept multiple festival awards in 2011, including the Grand Prize at the Cannes Critics Week.

Independent director Jeff Nichols’ ‘Take Shelter’ taps into the wave of generalized anxiety that currently runs through American life: the economy, unstable weather patterns, crime and social breakdown, conspire to drive devoted father and husband Curtis to extreme measures. Oscar nominee® Michael Shannon (Boardwalk Empire, Revolutionary Road ) plays the male lead,  alongside rising star and Oscar® nominee Jessica Chastain (The Help, Tree of Life).  Jeff Nichols’ latest feature film, ‘Mud’ starring Matthew McConaughey and Reese Witherspoon, is one of 22 films vying for the Palme d’Or in the 2012 Cannes Film Festival’s main competition.

Screenings of Take Shelter will take place daily from May 8 to 14 at the Katara Cultural Village Drama Theatre (Building 16). This release is supported by the film’s Middle East distributor, Italia Film.  For show timings and ticket details, please consult the DFI website: www.dohafilminstitute.com and Katara website www.katara.net or DFI box office located in Katara, building 26.

Thakira(Dhakira) Salt Marsh and Estuary in North Alkhor Qatar

Thakira is a small village located a few kilometres to the North of Al Khor. Like many of Qatar's towns it has tripled in size over the last few years, and it is becoming more difficult to navigate your way through the maze of half-built houses to get to the shore side. If you are a nature lover, though, it is well worth doing so, as the vista is completely different from much of the rest of Qatar.

Thakira-Sunset time Qatar

Thakira not only rests on the edge of an estuary, it is also home to mangrove swamps. While, because of the extremely high saline content of the sea in this area, the mangroves are not as large as in other countries, they are probably the most established in Qatar.

If you are out for a quite time you may just wish to take a couple of photos, have a stroll around the jetty, chat to some local fishermen and enjoy the unusual peace. However if you are more adventurous you might fancy a bit of swamp snorkeling.

The snorkeling is not quit as dramatic as over a reef, and is often in very shallow water. Once you get into the swamps you often have to pull yourself along by the roots of the mangroves. (Expect to collect a few scratches along the way!) The visibility of the water is poor, and the effect can be quite scary as the mangroves loom above - you should, however, be able to see plenty of the small fish that inhabit the swamps.
Thakira-Mangroves Qatar

At low tide you might want to get out into the swamps to explore the wildlife here. There's plenty to see here, from kingfishers and marsh harriers to exotic sea slugs - including a new species of sea slug discovered on a Qatar Natural History Group expedition.

If you have a four wheel drive you could also choose to cross the swamps at low tide, park at the wadi and enjoy the beach opposite Al Thakira. If you do so, take care: one trip ended in disaster when the cars involved got stuck in the face of an advancing tide, and ended up having to be rescued. The pictures of the abandoned cars made the front page of the next day's Gulf Times!

After enjoying the mangrove swamps, try stopping at Al Khor on the way back to Doha to enjoy the beach - and some great Turkish food along Main Street.

Umm Salal Mohammed Fort Qatar

Umm Salal Mohammed Fort Qatar

Situated at 20 km north of Doha on the North Highway, Umm Salal Mohammed fort creates a vibrant impression in the visitors' mind.

The fort comes into sight after going through the Umm Salal Mohammed town.
One can view the fort Umm Salal Mohammed after going about 1.5 miles.

Many castles and forts in Qatar are there that attract the tourists. These include Marroub Fort, Al-Ghuwair Castle, Umm Salal Mohammed Fort, Al-Thughb Fort, Barzan Tower, Al-Zubarah fort, Al-Jassasiya and Al-Wajbah Fort.

Umm Salal Mohammed fort is a19th-century fortress. It is a four-storied structure with thick walls of sand-color. There is an impressive facade raised with traditional Arabian crenelations. Entering there lately will enable the viewers to watch the decorative architectural structures minutely. This is one of the main attractions of Qatar. This is a residential fort where both military and civil functions take place. There is a small mosque in front of the Umm Salal Mohammed fort.

Visit to Umm Salal Mohammed fort is really worth and truly exciting. It remains mostly closed. There are two towers that rise beyond the four stories in height. The styles and the tradition have been greatly married in Umm Salal Mohammed fort. Waiting patiently will let the visitors view the inside.

Forts and Mosques in Qatar

Numerous Forts and Mosques can be found around Qatar giving you a wonderful insight to the countries culture, history and heritage.

Borj Barzan Fort
Borj Barzan Fort was built in the 19 Century to protect the water reservoir in the Umm Salaam Mohamed area. To facilitate this protection two distinguishable watch towers jutting about 20 meters high were erected on either side.

Borj Barzan Fort
Borj Barzan Fort

Al Ghuwair Castle
Situated about 85 km from Doha, Al Ghuwair Castle these days mostly consists of ruins. The thick 130 cm walls are still visible in some parts giving the visitor an idea of what it looked like in the 19th century.

Al Rekiyat Fort
Not much is known about this fort, the structure simply consists of the traditional square with 3 circular towers about 12 m high.

Umm Salal Mohamed Fort
Built in the 19th Century about 25 km north of Doha stands the Umm Salal Mohamed Fort. The solid structure with large impermeable walls was designed as a residential Fort.

Simaisma Mosque
Local fisherman and Pearl divers built this mosque in 1938. The Mosque was built with an unusual design of overlapping raw pieces of coral rock and limestone. The roof was finished with a layer of compressed mud. This mosque served a dual function as it served as a place for prayer, but also a center for education. The original prayer area is situated on the west side of the courtyard and the original educational area is just in front of it.   The school area today servers as the home of the "Muezzin,” who is responsible for the call to prayer. Prayers are still conducted in this mosque till today and visitors are advised not take pictures or enter during prayer times.

New amusement park opens in Souq Waqif

Waqif Land, a new entertainment park located in Souq Waqif, opened yesterday with hundreds of people availing of various family and thrill rides, some of which are new to Doha.

With the opening of the fun park, Souq Waqif adds another reason for families to visit Doha’s cultural hub and having opened on a Friday, many families thronged the amusement park as early as 2pm.
One of the more exciting rides in the park is the Drop and Twist Tower which is different as it offers a ‘twist’ from the normal Drop Tower. It rotates either clockwise or counter clockwise as the gondola moves up and down, offering rider an exhilarating experience.

The Side Winder is another attraction at the newly opened park for thrill riders. It has a capacity of eight passengers, with each person strapped onto a rotating disc, which hangs at the bottom of a giant pendulum and as the disc rotates, the pendulum swings.

Set on a U-shaped track, the Mind Blaster rolls back and forth as circular carriages spin rapidly, a definite must for thrill seekers.

The park has also 6D cinema which takes the viewing pleasure to an entirely new dimension. Unlike 3D which offers visual depth or 4D which has special simulations including chair movement and effects such as wind blowing, water spraying, leg and back ticklers 6D exposes the audience to environmental elements such as rain, wind and smell, similar to what the characters in the movie experience.

Other rides include rollercoaster, mini drop tower, fun house and swing among others. In addition there is also a special indoor park where arcade games and those for children are available. Food stations are also accessible around the area.

With the way the park was constructed, it seemed it would stay there for quite sometime and sources said it would operate for three months initially but could stay there for up to two years based on the demand from the public.

To avail of the games, one has to purchase a card worth QR30 which is consumable for rides whose cost ranges from QR5 to QR50, the most expensive of which is the exciting Go Kart which is QR40 during weekdays and QR50 on weekends and requires an additional QR20 charge for helmets to ensure safety during the 10-minute ride.

The cards can be topped up and once the card owner has spent QR1,000 he becomes a VIP card holder which entitles him to discounts in the rides.

A Beautiful day in Doha Qatar

The former pearling and fishing community of Doha has grown enormously since the 1930s, when oil was discovered. Though "watch this space” might have been a good motto for Doha a few years ago, "enjoy this space” is probably a better motto for today.

Islamic Art Museum Doha Qatar

The centrepiece of the city, Doha Bay was carefully constructed with landfill to make an attractive crescent, along which runs shaded footpaths and cycling tracks. One great way to gain an introduction to the city is to begin at the south-eastern end of the corniche, at the Ras Abu Abboud street flyover, and either walk or drive to the Sheraton Doha Hotel and Resort, looking out for prominent landmarks along the way. Dhow (boat) rides are available to take you around the bay and if you have four hours to fill, it is a beautiful way to view the corniche.

Doha City Qatar

If you are up for a spot of shopping, Doha will not disappoint. Gulf shopping malls like City Center-Doha, Landmark and Hyatt Plaza appear to be even more opulent versions of American malls, complete with themed entertainment and Starbucks. But then you will find an abeyya shop selling women’s cloaks or a prayer bead counter next to a waffle stand that confirms that you are, indeed, shopping in the Middle East.

Souq Waqif Doha Qatar

Looking for something a little bit quirky? The best place to visit is the Second-hand Market in Doha’s Najma area. It is a great place to find that teapot from the British administration, minus the spout no doubt, or the date palm that you always wanted. The souq comes alive on Friday, when sales are conducted briskly from the back of trucks.

By this point you will have worked up an appetite. Pause for pomegranate juice in Arabian-style Al-Mourjan restaurant and watch the sun put a glint in the eye of Doha’s beautiful bay.

If you are not hungry, recharge by the beach at the Inter Continental Doha, which has a reputation for high quality service without the attitude.  Once your energy returns, hit the night running at the convivial hotspot, Paloma or at the city’s equally friendly cool-spot, the City Centre-Doha ice rink. Paloma is considered one of the most lively bars in town; curiously offering live music and Tex-Mex food. The City Centre is a hotspot of family-friendly fun, with ice skating, bowling and wall climbing.

Far from notions of exotic Arabian distance, and more than just a stopover, Qatar is a cultured destination refined by centuries of history, commerce and culture.
