James Blunt wins over fans with his vocal talent

James Blunt, who impressed with his excellent voice in a concert in Doha
James Blunt staged his first concert in Doha on Tuesday night, performing at the InterContinental beach in a Valentine’s Day gig.

Despite a long delay before the concert’s start (which prompted some to follow the singers words and say Goodbye My Lover before the show started), thousands of fans remained in place, waiting to see one of the most successful British artistes of the last decade give an impressive performance under the Doha night sky.

Although Blunt may not be everybody’s cup of tea, there can be no denying that he has become a significant figure in the world of pop music, especially following the remarkable success of his debut album, ‘Back to Bedlam.’
And during Tuesday night’s gig, he gave fans a taste of why this album proved such a success, belting out hits such as Beautiful Dawn, Goodbye My Lover, You’re Beautiful, Wise Men and many others.

Blunt opened the show with the song, So Far Gone, from his latest album ‘Some Kind of Trouble,’ and the first number was a strong start to the evening, hinting at a gig which was set to showcase his voice and feature a strong and tight live band. From then on he went through most of his back catalogue, swapping guitars before every song, and even taking to the keyboards for a number of songs.

The crowd enjoying hits such as You’re Beautiful, Goodbye My Lover, Stay the Night, and many more during his set on Valentine’s evening
Blunt has a distinctive tone in his voice, and the juxtaposition of the vulnerability of the sound, and his strength of delivery makes for a strong overall combination. The only slightly disappointing aspect of the concert was the lack of live touches, which could have elevated the show to another level.

In fact, one of the best moments of the night came about as a result of a technical hitch which led to the crowd helping the singer when the sounds system failed. He also jumped into the crowd later in the show, and these moments of spontaneity were what made the evening more memorable.

However, for most in attendance, it will be the performances of Goodbye My Lover and You’re Beautiful, which will last long in the memory. Blunt sang both impeccably, and his efforts were duly appreciated by the crowd.
“It was so amazing to see him here live in Doha,” said one excited female fan, “he is one of my favourite singers and he was just so good tonight – absolutely brilliant.” Others were left surprised at just how good Blunt was on the evening. “I wasn’t sure what to expect, but he was a lot better live than I thought he would be – I was pleasantly surprised!” added another member of the rowd.

Undoubtedly Blunt’s strength lies in the melodic, slower ballads which have brought him the most success during his career. While many dismiss this is boring and predictable, this is not the case, as songs such as Beautiful Dawn prove that the style can be made much more interesting by utilising the whole band.
Blunt’s concert was almost a 90-minute exercise in proving this point.  He had promised an exciting and memorable show before his concert, and he was certainly keen to prove that he is more than a one-trick pony. However, when that trick is so well refined and proving such a success, one wonders why he feels the need to change.

Either way, it seems that the singer won over a number of dubious onlookers with his infectious pop music and unique vocal talent. In short, this was a perfect way for couples to spend Valentine’s Day; women loved the chance to hear some of their favourite romantic songs, while men will have been impressed to hear that Blunt is a fine musician with an excellent voice.
