At a major international football conference, held on October 6th 2010 at Chelsea FC in London, England, the Qatar 2022 Bid Committee, who are attempting to bring the Football World Cup to the State of Qatar, in the Arabian Gulf, in the year 2022, unveiled detailed plans for their new superb, modernistic Lusail Stadium.
This stadium, with a seated capacity of 86,250 and surrounded by water, would be located at Al-Daayen, at the heart of New Lusail City, just north of Doha, the wonderful capital of Qatar. It is the final one to be revealed, of 12 stadium that form Qatar’s FIFA 2022 World Cup bid.They are all within an hour of central Doha, enabling football fans to attend two matches in one day.
The Lusail Stadium is designed by world-renowned British architects Foster & Partners and reflects various elements of Qatari heritage, including the traditional dhow sail.
Situated on an east-west orientation, the stadium will have shade across the entire pitch and will have the world’s largest cable-net roof.
The Lusail Stadium would host the World Cup Opening match and the Final, if Qatar wins the right to stage the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
H.E. Sheikh Mohammed bin Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, Chairman of the Qatar 2022 Bid, said: “The Iconic Lusail Stadium will serve as the perfect venue for the opening and final matches of the World Cup.
The stadium will inspire a new generation of regional and international sports venues, incorporating environmentally friendly cooling technologies to ensure the ideal conditions for players and spectators alike”.
He went on to say. “The design of the stadium provides fans with optimum views of the action in a cool and comfortable setting. Its beauty and ambition represent the pride and enthusiasm that we have displayed in our bid thus far and will continue to display until the day FIFA awards the 2022 World Cup and beyond.”
Like all of Qatar’s proposed stadiums, the Lusail Stadium will have its own metro station and be linked with major Qatar highways and bus routes, ensuring easy and seamless access for fans.
With flexibility at its core, the stadium will be able to adapt to a wide variety of future sporting, cultural and social events in Qatar after 2022.
If the State of Qatar, on the shores of the Arabian Gulf, is awarded the honour of staging the 2022 FIFA World Cup, construction of the Lusail Stadium will start in 2015 and be completed in 2019. It will retain its full capacity after 2022 to showcase future events, not only football.
All 12 of Qatar’s proposed 2022 FIFA World Cup stadiums will be completed or upgraded by 2020 as part of a $4 billion investment.

The Lusail Stadium is a superb example of innovative modern architecture, utilizing a state-of-the-art solar-powered cooling system in a part of the world where the heat and humidity can otherwise be oppressive.
Even though there is criticism from some quarters, taking the World Cup to Qatar in 2022, following Russia in 2018, at least takes a world football competition to parts of the world that have never had the opportunity of staging it before.
If nothing else, it must be good for the spread of football, or soccer, across the world.
The World Cup in Qatar in 2022 will also benefit football in Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Iraq, Yemen, Bahrain, Oman and the United Arab Emirates…. especially Abu Dhabi and Dubai!
The staging of the World Cup in South Africa in 2010, took the competition to the continent of Africa for the first time ever, and was seen as an outstanding success, so why not stage it in other new regions that have never had the chance in the past?
There may be some ill-feeling in England regarding the failure to procure the tournament for 2018, but, at least England has already staged it in 1966, so why should others not have their first opportunity now?
Western Europe has already staged the World Cup in recent years, whereas Asia has never staged it. At least much of eastern Russia is in Asia, as well as Qatar.
Asia is a vast continent, so different parts of Asia are benefiting in 2018 and 2022.
Of course, Russia west of the Urals is in Eastern Europe, and that region has never staged a World Cup either.
So fair’s fair……. it is a WORLD tournament, after all!!
